Combat Defence Systems is proud to be Perth’s only affiliate of Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW), a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) which is a product of years of experience training in a myriad of Martial Arts with some of the best Martial Arts instructors in the world.
COMBAT SUBMISSION WRESTLING (CSW) blends various martial arts including but not limited to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Russian Sambo, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Shootwrestling, Judo and Catchascatchcan. The CSW system includes techniques and submissions from all these arts and trains the individual to strike, clinch, takedown, and submit on the ground in either a sport, Mixed Martial Art (MMA), or self-defence environment. This Mixed Martial Art (MMA) has painful submissions and leg locks a plentiful and compliments Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) perfectly.
Erik was the first American to win the World Light-Heavy Weight Shooto Title in Japan. Shooto is a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) derived from shoot wrestling and originally formed in 1985. Erik’s teachers include Guro Dan Inosanto, Yorinaga Nakamura, Rigan Machado and Larry Hartsell.
He is a much sort out MMA coach and trains or has trained UFC fighters such as Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Renato Sobaral, Cub Swanson, Ben Jones, Craig Wilkerson, James Wilks, Sean Sherk, and Former UFC champion Brock Lesnar.
Erik holds black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, Tae Kwon Do and is a full instructor in Jeet Kune Do (JKD), Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) and Muay Thai.
To train in the CSW curriculum is to learn an evolved system of grappling and MMA and a system which is highly recommended by Combat Defence System’s training philosophy of constant evolution in training methods.

Do I have to be fit before I start?
No. Fitness is built over time through consistent training
I’m a beginner. Is that OK?
Absolutely! We cater to all levels in all classes. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Do you train for competitions?
No. At CDS we train for the purpose of self-defence and our training methods and techniques are a reflection of this.
Is training in a Gi?
No. As we are self-defence based, we train in what is known as no-gi grappling. We have a club uniform which consists of MMA shorts and a t-shirt or rashguard.
